Understanding and Appreciating great Photography

In the last days I was literally absorbed by the lecture of the new book from Michael Freeman. Michael Freeman is a true teacher for me. I have learned a lot about photography from
his classical textbooks: The Photographer's Eye, The Photographer's Mind, Perfect Exposure, The complete guide to Black & White Digital Photography.

It is an excellent book about the whats, the whys and the hows in modern photography. The book is written in a very sofisticated level, it exceeds by far the traditional photographic criticism and it goes deep into the field of philosophy of arts. It takes a lot of effort to read this books, most probably you have to read and reread this book, come forth and back on specific subject mater. But the lecture is very rewarding, it is a kind of journey through the vast landscapes of contemporary photography. Afterwards you would most probably come away enlightened, looking through a much wider horizon and with a new vision to what photography is all about ...

WHAT A PHOTOGRAPH IS... AND ISN'T

Takes directly from real life (Although the camera can be used to construct images, particularly in studio work, the great strength of photography is that the physical world around us provides the material. This elevates the importance of the subject, the event; and the reporting of this is obviously something at which photography excels. At the same time, however, this ease of capture reduces the value of accurate representation, because it has become commonplace--very different from the early view of painting, when Leonardo da Vinci wrote in his notebook that "painting is most praiseworthy which is most like the thing represented." Instead, the way in which photographers document --the style and treatment-- becomes more significant.At a deeper level, there is an inherent paradox between depicting reality and yet being something completely apart as a freestanding image. Other arts, like painting, poetry, and music, are obvious as constructs. There is no confusion in anyone's mind that a poem or a song have originated anywhere else but in the mind of their creator, and that the experience in life that they refer to has been filtered through an imagination, and that some time has been taken to do this. In this respect, photographs do create confusion. The image is, in most cases, so clearly of a real scene, object, or person, and yet it remains just an image that can be looked at quietly in completely divorced circumstances. It is of real life, and at the same time separate. This contradiction offers many possibilities for exploration, and much contemporary fine- art photography does just that, including making constructions to mimic real-life content ).

Has a specific look ( Whatever choice of paper texture and coating you make for a print, the image itself is completely without a third dimension. The frame is a window, and this sets photography apart from painting and from any kind of imagery created by hand. In many ways, this lack of physical presence makes screen display perfect, and this is increasingly how most photographs get viewed. In terms of its look, photography begins with the viewer's expectation that the contents are "real"--taken from real life. In fact, we relate the appearance of a photograph to two things: how we ourselves see, and how we have learned to accept the look of a photograph. We are very sensitive to the naturalism and "realism" of a photograph. The further that a photographer takes the image away from this, by complicated processing or unusual post-production techniques, the less the image is photographic. This is not a criticism, just a statement of obvious fact. The basic photographic look relies on the assumption that very little has been done to the image since it was captured. Photography also has its own vocabulary of imagery, not found anywhere else. This includes such things as differential focus, a limited dynamic range, motion blur, flare artefacts, less-than-fully-saturated colors, and the possibility of rendering the image entirely in black and white. )

Meine Kameras sind Instrumente für die Erforschung, die Darstellung und in einer gewissen Hinsicht der Kreation ( Entwurf ) meiner Welt ( oder Welten ) und meines (er) Ichs ...

Vor ein paar Tagen kam meine neue Nikon D7000. Bestellt habe ich die D7000 direkt bei amazon.de und wurde prompt am nächsten Tag geliefert (beiläufig gesprochen ich finde den Service von Amazon excellent!).

Gekauft habe ich mir die D7000 aus folgenden Gründen: ich brauche eine Zweitkamera neben meiner D300. Ein weiterer Beweggrund die D7000 zu kaufen, war die Option endlich Videos in Full-HD aufzunehmen.

The struggle with the colors ( Der Kampf mit den Farben ) ...

I will try to make this blog more photography oriented, since I take photography seriously.

In order to bring it to the "next level" with my photography, I had to solve the "color problem". Unfortunately I had to upgrade to new hardware: for a dual monitor setup a new ASUS VE278Q and ASUS PA246Q, for the 10-bit color display a new ATI FirePro V4800 graphic card, the i1 Display Pro ( by X-Rite ) for display profiling and the wacom intuos4 for more flexible post processing with photoshop CS5 and Lightroom.

In den letzten Wochen war ich erneut unterwegs auf einer Segelyacht. Dieser Törn führte von "Bormes des Mimosas" an der Côte d'Azur bis Athen. Die meiste Zeit aber bin ich durch die Inselwelten Italiens gesegelt. Dabei hatte ich natürlich meine Fotoausrüstung! Geschossen habe ich ca. 2500 Bilder ( erschrekend )! Diese zu sortieren, auswerten, bearbeiten und präsentieren ist eine richtige Sisyphusarbeit! Hier könnt ihr eine erste Bild-Dokumentation betrachten ...

Seit einigen Wochen bin ich unterwegs auf den griechischen Inseln. Hier möchte ich einfach einige spontane Gedanken und hauptsächlich meine Fotografie-Versuche mit euch teilen. Eine etwas mehr formale Darstellung meiner Törns findet ihr auf meiner Website: Greek Islands - Summer 2011.

Der Aphaia Tempel auf Aigina

Hier sind einpaar Aufnahmen von meinem ( leider ) sehr flüchtigen Besuch zu dem Aphaia Tempel auf der Insel Aigina. Die Bilder sind mit einer Nikon D300 und dem Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 aufgenohmen. Die Schwerz-Weiss interpretation ist unterwegs sehr schnell auf einem Samsung NC10 Netbook mit Photoshop CS5 gemacht worden.

Aigina - Aphaia Tempel

Aphaia (griechisch die Nicht-dunkle, also die Helle; latein Aphaea) war eine griechische Göttin. Sie hatte ihren Kult nur auf der Insel Aigina und war die Hauptgöttin dieser Insel, stammte aber wohl ursprünglich aus Kreta. Seine Giebelfiguren, in der Archäologie als Aigineten bekannt, wurden 1812 an den bayerischen Kronprinzen Ludwig verkauft und befinden sich seitdem in der Glyptothek in München. [Quelle: Wikipedia].

Die Aufnahmen wurden im Sommer 2010 auf den Inseln der Kykladen mit einer Nikon D300 gemacht, es wurden verschiedene Objektive eingesetzt. Die hier versuchte Interpretation beruht auf eine Farbkorrektur mit Hilfe der Gradationskurven und wurde mit Photoshop CS5 realisiert.

Die Aufnahmen wurden im Sommer 2010 auf Rhodos ( Altstadt ) mit einer Nikon D300 gemacht. Die hier versuchte Interpretation beruht auf eine Split Toning technique und wurde in Photoshop CS5 realisiert.

Interpretation C

Die Aufnahmen wurden im Sommer 2009 auf Monemvasia ( Peloponnes-Griechenland ) mit einer Nikon D300 gemacht. Die hier versuchte Interpretation beruht auf dem Bleach-Bypass Effekt und wurde mit Photoshop CS5 realisiert.

Der Bleach-Bypass-Effekt ist ein visueller Effekt, bei dem der Vorgang des Bleichens bei der Farbfilmentwicklung teilweise oder komplett ausgelassen wird. Dadurch wird das schwarze Silber nicht in Silberbromid umgewandelt und bleibt zusammen mit den Farbstoffen auf dem Film. Das Ergebnis ist ein Farbbild, das von einem Schwarzweißbild überlagert wird. Dadurch erhält das Bild weniger Sättigung und Belichtungsumfang sowie einen erhöhten Kontrast und mehr Körnigkeit. Üblicherweise wird Bleach Bypass in Verbindung mit einem um einen Blendenwert unterbelichteten Film verwendet, um den Effekt noch zu verstärken. [Quelle: Wikipedia]

Monemvasia (griechisch Μονεμβασία (f. sg.), auch Monemvassia, Monembasia, Malvasy) ist eine griechische Kleinstadt, die im byzantinischen Reich bedeutender Stützpunkt und Festung war. Sie liegt auf einem Felsen vor der Küste Lakoniens im Südosten der Halbinsel Peloponnes.

Lindos, die Perle von Rhodos - eine Bilderstrecke. Die Bilder sind im Sommer 2010 mit einer Nikon D300 aufgenohmen. Die nachträgliche Bearbeitung wurde mit Photoshop CS5 durchgeführt ( Gradationskuven, Farbbalance ). Meine Absicht war eine einheitliche Atmosphäre zu erzeugen.

In der Galerie der Gegenwart der Hamburger Kunsthalle findet neben der großen Philip Otto Runge-Retrospektive die Ausstellung "Cut. Scherenschnitte 1970-2010" statt. Nachdem Runge eher den klassischen Scherenschnitt repräsentiert, geht es bei “Cut” um dessen moderne Verwendung und Interpretation. Derzeit lässt sich in der internationalen Gegenwartskunst erneut ein wachsendes Interesse an diese Technik beobachten. Der Begriff „Cut“ umfasst, in seiner neuen Verwendung, nicht nur die klassischen Techniken des Scherenschnitts und des Silhouettierens, sondern auch ganz neue Entwicklungen und Anwendungen. Der „Cut“ erobert den dreidimensionalen Raum, neue Materialien werden getestet und Schnittstellen zu anderen Medien, wie Fotografie, Film, Video und Theater werden hergestellt. Gezeigt werden ca. 50 Arbeiten aus den Jahren 1970-2010.

Vorbild für die Arbeiten vieler der junger Künstler sind die Scherenschnitte von Philipp Otto Runge (1777-1810). Scherenschnitte von Runge werden im Rahmen der großen Runge-Retrospektive Kosmos Runge in der Hamburger Kunsthalle gezeigt.

Künstler wie Kara Walker, William Kentridge oder Christian Boltanski beziehen sich in ihren Schattenspielen und Projektionen auf Platons Gleichnis und betonen damit die Ambivalenz von sichtbarer Welt und Scheinwelt, Wirklichkeit und Wahrnehmung, Aktualität (Gegenwart, Augenblick) und Erinnerung.

Was ist wahr und wirklich, was ist Irrtum oder Täuschung? Diese Fragen wirft der griechische Philosoph Platon (427-347 v. Chr.) in seinem berühmten Höhlengleichnis auf.

Platon beschreibt einige Menschen, die in einer unterirdischen Höhle von Kindheit an so festgebunden sind, dass sie weder ihre Köpfe noch ihre Körper bewegen und deshalb immer nur auf die ihnen gegenüber liegende Höhlenwand blicken können. Licht haben sie von einem Feuer, das hinter ihnen brennt. Zwischen dem Feuer und ihren Rücken befindet sich eine Mauer. Hinter dieser Mauer werden Bilder und Gegenstände vorbeigetragen, die die Mauer überragen und Schatten an die Wand werfen. Die „Gefangenen“ können nur diese Schatten der Gegenstände wahrnehmen. Wenn die Träger der Gegenstände sprechen, hallt es von der Wand so zurück, als ob die Schatten selber sprächen. Da sich die Welt der Gefangenen ausschließlich um diese Schatten dreht, deuten und benennen sie diese, als handelte es sich bei ihnen um die wahre Welt [Quelle: Wikipedia].

Beim Betrachten von Kunstwerken, wie z.B. Christian Boltanskis „Théâtre d'ombres“ (1985), William Kentridges „Shadow Procession“ (1999) und Kara Walkers „Darkytown Rebellion“ (2001) hat man das Gefühl in einer ähnlichen Situation, wie die Gefangen Platons versetzt zu sein. Man wird von der gleichen Fragestellungen, wie Platons Gefangenen geplagt. Eine definitive und entgültige Antwort auf diese Fragen wird man wohl nicht bekommen, der Betrachter verlässt aber den Ausstellungsraum nicht, ohne vorher der Ambivalenzen zwischen Wirklichkeit und Täuschung, Wahrheit und Irrtum, Gegenwart und Geschichte, Leben und Tod ausgesetzt zu sein.

Das „Théâtre d'ombres“ verdeutlicht z.B. die Ambivalenz von Tod und Kindheit, die sich durch Boltanskis Werk zieht. Der riesige Schatten einer kleinen Marionette lenkt die Betrachtenden vom Objekt selbst ab, nur der Reflex des Gegenstandes bleibt getreu Platons Höhlengleichnis dem Menschen sichtbar. „Urbilder, die unbewusste Erinnerungen auslösen“ so Boltanski in einem Interview, „also Bilder, die oft mit Bildern aus unserer frühesten Kindheit in Beziehung stehen: Archetypen, die es jedem erlauben, seine eigene Geschichte zu erzählen.“

Ein Besuch der Ausstellung in der Hamburger Galerie der Gegenwart lohnt es sich auf jeden Fall. Es ist ein durchaus erlebnisvolle Einblick in die magische Höhle der Schatten und Schnitte. Eine Einsicht in uns selbst.

Nach ein paar Wochen der Muße und Entspannung bin ich wieder Feuer und Flamme für die Vorbereitung der Reisen und Einsätze für die nächste Saison 2011.

Meine neue Leidenschaft, die Hand in Hand mit meiner Begeisterung fürs Reisen geht, heißt Fotografie ( Photography ). Endlich ich verfüge über die Zeit und Mitteln um meiner Neigung zu folgen. Technik und Ästhetik meiner Aufnahmen sollen deutlich verbessert werden. Keine leichte Aufgabe, sollte jemand anderer Meinung sein. Fotografieren ist ein schweres Handwerk.

In den letzten drei Tagen war ich voll und ganz bei der Erfüllung dieser Aufgabe. Extreme Ansichten war der Leit-Titel eines intensiven Foto-Workshops. Perspektive, Standpunkt ( viewpoint ), oben, unten, scharf, unscharf, verzerrt, verwackelt, ungewohnt, Schräglage, Spiegelung, Format (Frame), An-, Aus-, Goldener Schnitt, Helligkeit, Transparenz, Durchsicht, Licht, Dunkelheit, Schaten, Bewegung waren einige der Leit-Begriffe mit deren Hilfe wir die Gestaltung unserer eigenen Foto-Ansichten und die Bewältigung der gestellten Aufgaben vornehmen sollten. Nach dem Einsatz auf dem Wrack von Mazotos ( Zypern ) als Forschungstaucher, die Segelsaision hat mit einer gewissen Verspätung angefangen. Trotz der allgemeinen Misere, der trüben, ja düsteren Stimmung, ich habe, Gott sei dank, mit vollen Händen zu tun.
Die Lektüre, die mich während dieser Saison begleitet ist Hölderlins Hyperion oder der Eremit in Griechenland. Ein Buch, das mir Trost und Inspiration schenkt.

THE DIVING CHALLENGE BEGINS! I am leaving on Monday 17 March for Phuket-Thailand for my DM/IDC/EFRI/MSDT Prep courses. So currently I concentrate all my efforts to study and prepare myself for this new challendge.

A few words about my diving background. In recent years I have been employed as a scientist in the Department of Physical Oceanography at the University of Hamburg, Germany. During the years 2005 – 2006 I have been trained continuously in a supervised program at the scientific diving center of Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Germany and I am certified European Scientific Diver (ESD Nr. D-070)

In the last year I decided to make a change in my life and follow a more close to reality
maritime career. I decided also to take a further diving education on a professional level.
After a few days of intense internet research, I came apon the website of Chris Owen.

The See Bees Diving Academy is based in the exotic Phuket in Thailand. After some email exchange with Chris I came to the decision to go there early in this year for a professional training. The whole package includes: the DM (Divemaster) education / the complete IDC (Instructor Development Course) / the EFRI (Emergency First Response Instructor) and the MSDT (Master Scuba Diver Trainer) Prep.

It is really a huge challenge, which requires dedication, commitment, effort, time and money. I hope I will enjoy it.
